STARWARD was born from a simple idea, borrowing knowledge from the past and marrying it with the best of what Australia has to offer this iconic spirit category: its barley, its barrels, and its climate. It is the temperamental climate that allows STARWARD distillers to take advantage of Melbourne's 'four seasons in one day' climate to age their single malt in three years, a process that founder David Vitale calls 'elemental maturing'.
The Wine Cask Project uses Australian red wine barrels to age their whisky, shipping them overnight from wineries as soon as they’re emptied so that they’re still ‘wet’ when filled at the distillery. So they have that long tannic finish, just as you would see one of Australia’s award-winning red wines.
This unique and evocative expression is winning fans all over the globe but particularly experts in the whisky field, it was recently crowned Best Craft Distilled Whisky in the world at the revered San Francisco International Spirits Competition and received a Double Gold medal at the same show, meaning it was given the highest possible marks from each judge in its category.
The liquid gives a great balance of sweet and savoury (the nose is balanced with aromas of raisin, banana and a touch of balsamic lead to clove, toffee and nougat and the palate is filled with red berries, hints of cinnamon and a variety of savoury and spice). Definitely one to try for the whisky enthusiasts, especially if your poison is usually the single malt.
