SPANISH GIN

According to the latest figures from consumer data provider Statista, Spanish gin consumption stands at 0.8 litres per person, on average, compared with 0.3 litres per person for Europe as a whole. Indeed, the Spanish-style gin and tonic, known as a ‘gin tonica’ – invariably served in a bulbous, stemmed glass, known as a ‘copa de balon’ – has been elevated to cult status on the social scene in the Spanish capital, Madrid, and elsewhere in the country.

Domestic gin distillers, of which there are dozens, have responded by concentrating on gins that feature not only botanicals, which are introduced during the distillation process to create a rich, full-bodied flavour, but also a whole host of unusual ingredients not commonly found in British gins. Such ingredients introduce elements of fruitiness, spiciness and sweetness to the base liquor.

One of the most famous Spanish gins, Gin Mare, for example, blends individual distillations of Arbequina olives – the signature botanical – basil, juniper, rosemary and thyme with orange and lemon peel that has been steeped in neutral spirit for twelve months before distillation. The end result is an authentic, original gin, which smells herbaceous and tastes distinctly ‘Mediterranean’.

Elsewhere on the Iberian Peninsula, Rives Special Gin has been produced in El Puerto de Santa María, in the province of Cádiz, for the best part of four decades and has the distinction of being the only 100% Andalucian gin to be distilled in traditional copper pots stills. Rives Special is premium, well-balanced gin, characteristic of one of the leading brands in the Spanish gin market.
