ENGLISH GIN

Gin is probably the most quintessentially English spirit, even though its origins actually lie in the Netherlands. Originally derived from a Dutch spirit flavoured with juniper berries, gin became popular in England in the late 17th century when import restrictions led to huge price increases on French brandy. Gin distilleries sprang up all over the country, particularly in London, although the characteristic London Dry style of gin is a more recent invention.

Initially, gin was seen as a cheap intoxicant, leading to an 18th-century "gin panic" in which newspapers spread sensational tales about gin's connection to crime and violence. In time, however, gin emerged to become a staple of English drinking culture. The 19th century saw the introduction of the most common gin cocktail, the gin and tonic. This refreshing drink was originally developed as a way to get British soldiers serving in hot climates to take their dose of an effective but bitter antimalarial medication called quinine.

The world of gin, long dominated by a small number of large distillers making traditional London Dry gins, has experienced a revolution in recent years, with English distillers leading the way. Intrigued by the ways in which gin's complex flavours influenced cocktails, distillers began experimenting with the spirit's botanical ingredients. These included both traditional recipes and new combinations, leading to a greater variety of English gins than ever before. Our selection of English gins offers both established classics and new experiments for you to explore.
