Lemon Drop Martini

Part of the '80s cocktail revival, this lemon drop martini recipe tastes almost like the sweet of the same name... albeit in liquid form!

The Lemon Drop Martini was likely created in the 1970s in San Francisco. In some cases, it's served in a double shot glass as a shooter, but in most instances, it's served in a cocktail or martini glass. As with any shaken drink, stirring produces a stronger flavour as there are fewer chips of ice melted into the drink.

Lemon Drop Martini


  • A martini glass
  • 1 single shot of Absolut citron vodka
  • 1 single shot of Cointreau triple sec
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice
  • Ice
  • A cocktail shaker
  • Caster sugar to garnish

How to serve it

  • Place all the ingredients except the garnish into the cocktail shaker and shake.
  • Lightly wet the rim of the martini glass with a lemon slice and place the glass upside down in the sugar to sugar the rim.
  • Strain the mixture into glass.

In practice, you can achieve a similar effect with a variety of flavoured vodkas to produce different types of drops – blueberry drops, raspberry drops and mango drops are quite common. Alternatively, muddled fruit could be added to the original lemon drop martini recipe to create a different flavour.
