You Should Be Drinking: Ultraviolet

Pantone have announced their colour of 2018, and this year it is…. Ultraviolet!

Chosen for it’s complex and contemplative nature (suggesting mystery beyond the cosmos), Pantone think that Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity and visionary thinking.
Well we’ll take some of that, this dramatic purple shade also looks fabulous in a glass!

Get your hands on a bottle of Zymogorium Sweet Violet Gin Liqueur or a bottle of The Bitter Truth’s Violet Liqueur for some seriously, spacial sipping. Or for something that adds a subtle hint of galaxian to your liquor cabinet, try Whitley Neill Rhubarb and Ginger. Or for a touch of true Cosmology, try Sharish Blue Magic Gin, that only get’s a purple hue once it is added to tonic!

If you’re looking for something to shake up and serve that boasts this topical tone, try your hand at an Aviation.

A New York classic from the early 20th century, the aviation was created in the Hotel Wallick, where Hugo Ensslin was the head bartender. Naturally, when he published a book in 1916, the Aviation recipe was a major part. Crème de Violette can be rather tough to find, and as a result, when Harry Craddock included the drink the the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book, he omitted it, meaning that the drink was served without one of its central ingredients for over forty years! However, Crème de Violette is now firmly back in circulation and the Aviation is restored to it’s former glory in minds of bartenders everywhere.

Make yours using:

50ml Gin - we recommend using Martin Millers because of its violet undernotes
10ml Crème de Violette - Bitter Truth’s is excellent in an Aviation
15ml Maraschino Liqueur
15ml Fresh Lemon Juice

Pour all your ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and serve in a chilled martini glass or coupette. Garnish with a maraschino cherry, lemon zest or a parma violet for a thirsty throwback.

Cheers!
