The Spirit of Adventure

Ophir Oriental Spiced Gin hails from Britain’s second largest distillery, G&J Distillers (England’s oldest producer of premium gin) which boasts a (hard-earned) world-class reputation for expertise and craftsmanship. It is this knowledge that shines through in Ophir, which has recently achieved the lofty accolade of the world’s fastest-growing premium gin brand.

Pronounced O-peer, it is named after the legendary region famed for its wealth and riches which prospered during the reign of King Solomon. The King regularly received cargoes of gold, silver, sandalwood, pearls, ivory, apes and peacocks from Opihr, and whilst its exact location remains a mystery, it is thought to have been in the Orient along the Ancient Spice Route and this precious cargo will have sailed through wild seas and treacherous pirate-infested waters to get to him. This lead Ophir’s Master Distiller Joanne Moore to choose exotic botanicals to create the flavour and character of the gin with this Ancient Spice Route in mind, taking inspiration from visits to the Orient and various countries along the route. The botanicals that were chosen include spicy Cubeb berries from Indonesia, Black Pepper from India and Coriander from Morocco, which results in a heady spice explosion with a discernible sweetness and cheeky zesty bursts. Joanne hopes that when people enjoy the gin, they are reminded of the vibrant aromas, tastes, noises and colours of the exotic spice markets.

And in the spirit of this adventurous spirit, Ophir have just unveiled their brand new global ambassador, record-breaking British sailor, Alex Thompson - who we’ll sure you agree, is The Spirit of Adventure, personified and as the first ambassador for the brand, he is the perfect partner for their link to maritime adventure and discovery.  Thomson, who is the fastest Brit to sail solo, non-stop around the world on a monohull and is tipped to win the Vendée Globe in 2020. The race, which takes place every four years and is the pinnacle race of sailing adventure, has been in existence since 1989 and sees the world’s best off-shore sailors spend over 70 days racing 26,000 miles solo and unassisted across the world’s oceans. Having finished third in 2013 and second in 2017, Thomson will make sporting history if he wins the solo, non-stop, round-the-world race in 2020.

In celebration of this exciting and pioneering collaboration between industries, we’ve got some brand new Ophir ‘Globe’ balloon glasses to give away with every bottle purchased - to get your hands on two of these gorgeous glasses, buy your bottle now and sip the Spirit of Adventure.
