Spotlight On: Sing Gin

If you spend your life deep in the Yorkshire Dales surrounded by breath-taking beauty, it’s fair to assume that you’ll live your life inspired by your surroundings. But Ian Thompson and his family have taken one step further, and let nature inspire them into creating a gin.

Meet Sing Gin, a premium small-batch gin that hails from Kettlesing in Harrogate and celebrates Yorkshire - because people from Yorkshire, LOVE Yorkshire (I can say that, guess where I’m from…). Every drop of this complex and sophisticated liquid reflects the Thompson family’s belief in the life-affirming power of natural beauty.

Ian Thompson wanted to create a legacy for his wife Carol and twin sons, Richard and James that honoured the family’s roots and could be passed down for generations. He found the challenge was capturing the spirit of the Dales - in mood, method, ingredients, flavour & branding.

Sing Gin is made with a blend of seven botanicals including juniper, mint, orange peel and flax. Ian started Sing Gin’s story by installing a small copper pot still in his cellar and recreating the flavours of his favourite gins. This lead to experimenting with more obscure and esoteric botanicals, working out which worked together, what lead to what texture and what evoked the spirit he had chosen (and that Carol and the boys approved of!).

It was this experimentation that lead to Ian choosing to use grapes as his base spirit, rather than grain, which is typically used by gins. Grape spirit produces a fruitiness and smoothness that is unmatched.  He settled on flax as a pinnacle botanical because of its provenance in Yorkshire’s history and crush all botanicals by hand, allowing the oils to escape and strengthen the flavour of the gin.

We’re big fans of this flavourful, elegant gin - and it would seem that the gin judges are too, with Sing Gin recently winning two silver awards at the prestigious International Wine & Spirit Competition in the London Dry Gin and Gin & Tonic categories.
