
One of the most iconic and beloved cocktails, the Manhattan is made with three simple ingredients: whiskey (American of course), vermouth and bitters. Complex, challenging and moreish, the changes in your Manhattan come from the vermouth and whether you want it sweet, dry or 'perfect' (a 50/50 mix of sweet & dry vermouths).
Invented in around 1880, the cocktail quickly became one of the most famous in the world, and the story goes that it was created by a Dr Iain Marshall came up witht he recipe for a part that was held at the Manhattan Club in New York City by Lady Randolph Churchill (Winston's mother!). Traditionally served with Rye whiskey, this creates a spicier Manhattan - you can also try yours with Bourbon for a softer version.
Ingredients
- 60ml Whiskey
- 30ml Vermouth
- 3 dashes Angostura Bitters
How To
In a mixing glass, add all three ingredients, plenty of ice and stir to dilute to taste. Strain into a chilled Martini glass and farnish with a maraschino cherry.
