Versatile Vodka

One of the UK's most popular sprits, due in large to its ability to be enjoyed neat (thanks to its clean, crisp taste through extensive distillation and filtering) or as a building block for a delicious mixer or cocktail, vodka is rightfully regarded as one of the most versatile spirits around. With origins dating back to 9th-Century Russia, vodka has stood the test of time as one of the world's favourite spirits. The popularity of the drink really came into its own in the middle of the 16th century in Poland, with the ingenious idea to mix vodka with fruit, herb and spice blends to create an early incarnation of a cocktail that could be either sweet or savoury to the taste. Vodka became the spirit du jour in the UK during the Sixties' cultural revolution, when drinking in public houses and bars became more acceptable. This pre-dated the cocktail culture that would become prevalent throughout Great Britain and much of Europe during the 1970s onwards.

Medicinal Properties

Vodka has long been thought of as possessing medicinal qualities; even in the Western world, where scientific research has highlighted the benefits of moderate vodka intake on the effectiveness of the human metabolism. In its neat form, vodka is free of carbohydrates, sugars and fats, and contains very few calories. Perhaps the health benefits of vodka are best explained in its natural production methods. Standard vodka is a combination of water and ethanol, derived from the distillation of cereal grains, wheat, rye, soy beans or potatoes. This contributes to a largely sugar-free, low-calorie drink.

As You Like It

There are three ways to enjoy vodka: neat, as a mixer or as part of a cocktail. The mixer phenomenon has lent weight to all sorts of weird and wonderful flavoured vodka combinations coming to light, and you only need to take a quick browse of our range of flavours to see that for yourself: from orange and marmalade, to toffee, coconut, mint and rhubarb, there is something for every palate.

Some of the most popular and most widely-served cocktails are vodka based, too. Grab yourself a bottle, add a splash of dry vermouth and you͛ve got yourself a Vodka Martini. There's even a Vodka cocktail for the morning after the night before, just add spice and tomato juice to your chosen vodka to create a Bloody Mary. A Black Russian is simply a mix of vodka and coffee liqueur and the Cosmopolitan is vodka blended with Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice. This shows just how versatile a spirit vodka can be.

Tastes Good, Looks Great

If you enjoy the visual aspect of purchasing spirits, as many people do, then the Crystal Head collection serves up sought-after vodkas free from artificial flavourings and additives for a clean, crisp taste, in an iconic crystal skull. Other brands to note are Grey Goose - including their visually arresting light-up illuminating bottles, Absolut, creative Smirnoff releases and delicious artisan vodkas from the likes of East London Liquor company and Black Cow.

So whether you prefer classic or premium vodkas, neat or flavoured, you will find the right brand in the right size at the right price right here.
