31DOVER have decided on a Great Gatsby inspired blog post and the only appropriate cocktail is the classic Gin Rickey. All you will need is a bottle of Tanqueray Gin and Schweppes Soda - simply add a lime and you have yourself a Gin Rickey.
When prohibition began in the US in 1920’s Tanqueray and Sons continued to ship their beverage to island off the US. Socialites would indulge in Tanqueray purchasing it via the black market and speakeasies – so this classic Gin is evidently the perfect giveaway for our Gatsby competition.
The writer of The Great Gatsby F. Scott Fitzgerald’s favourite tipple was the Gin Rickey and is in fact the only cocktail named in the novel. Chapter 7, Daisy asks Tom, her husband, for a round of cold drinks. It’s a hot summer day and Tom returns “preceding four Gin Rickey’s that clicked full of ice."
“Gatsby took up his drink.
‘They certainly look cool,’ he said, with visible tension.
We drank in long, greedy swallows.”

The Great Gatsby film is out in the cinema’s now directed by Baz Luhrmann and staring Leonard DiCaprio, Toby Maguire and Carey Mulligan. The story follows an ex war veteran Nick Carraway (Maguire) who moves to New York City, next door to a party-giving millionaire Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio). Carraway’s cousin Daisy (Mulligan), a good southern girl falls for the infamous Gatsby. The story ends tragically and the film is a visually dazzling and explosive affair. A must see this Spring.
