With the Premier League kicking off this weekend, we've got some topical trivia for you - Fine Wines in footie and winning on 35 pints...
Fine Wines in Footie
Wanna be more like the total icon that is José Mourinho? Finish (or watch) the match with a decent bottle of wine.
Mourinho's fine wine drinking ritual began with sharing a bottle after matches with Alex Ferguson. Remembering the first time this happened, he says, "It was Chelsea Football Club catering that bought the wine, and obviously the wine was not the top quality that the boss deserves. It was quite funny but disappointing." (Ferguson described this first wine bought by Mourinho as being 'like paintstripper'.)
Mourinho and Fergie don't like cheap plonk
"So the next time we play against each other, I called a friend and I told him, the best I want the best. And from that moment always the same bottle when I play against the boss." The bottle in question was a £300 Barca Velha, from Mourinho's native Portugal.
Fergie also enjoyed fine wines gifted and shared with other managers over the years: "My 25th year at United, Sam Allardyce bought me Château Latour 1986...Mancini always brought a bottle of Sassicaia to the game. He knew his wines okay. Arsene has some decent wines,” he said. "Chelsea weren’t very good. I had to remind them that they should have better wine. Abramovich in fact sent me a case of Tignanello the next week after I said that."
Ahhhhhh. Brought together by a shared love of Fine Wine. And football.
Alex Ferguson famously sold loads of his private Wine collection last year (May & June 2014) over several auctions, for around £3million. The collection included vintages dating from 1986, when Sir Alex was appointed at Old Trafford, to 2011.
The most expensive lot was a Methuselah (equivalent to eight standard bottles) of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Vintage 1997, which made £94,815. Well it did include a card signed 'Best Wishes Alex Ferguson'...

Winning on 35 Pints
Ray Parlour told how he and his Arsenal team-mates once drunk 35 pints in an afternoon - before going on to win the Premier League and FA Cup double. OK it was 35 pints between five of them, so seven each, but still I wouldn't want to take part in any form of sport the morning after seven pints, especially professional football.
The former Gunners midfielder was describing a pre-season tour ahead of Arsene Wenger's first season in charge of the club in 1997:
"I’ll always remember the moment Steve Bould went up to the bar and ordered 35 pints for five of us. After we left the bar we spotted all the French lads in the coffee shop and they were sitting around smoking. I thought, 'how are we going to win the league this year? We’re all drunk and they’re all smoking', and we ended up winning the double that year."
Pellegrini got a yellow card for not winning the season tittle last year; some critics say he's a 'cold' coach... We can help Man City fans with that. P'raps he should try warming himself up with a nice bottle of Spiced Rum? ;)
And don't forget to order your fine wines for the footie!
