July 4th Cocktails: Red, White & Booze
Love America, hate America - July 4th is a day synonymous with summer celebrations. And what better way to toast to the good ol' US of A than with a red, white and blue cocktail or two?
From the fruity yet slightly more sophisticated sangria, through to the sweet liqueur shooter, there's a July 4th cocktail for every palate, skill level and budget:
1. White Wine-Berry Sangria
In a pitcher, combine the wine, soda, vodka and brandy to make a sangria.
Put a few raspberries and a small handful of chopped strawberries into the bottom of each glass and muddle.
Fill glass with ice, then top with the sangria and a few blueberries. Stir.
2. Red, White & Blue Vodka Jar Slushies
In a blender on the ice crush setting, blend together the cranberry juice and ice of 1 tray until full combined and slushy. Set aside.
Next combine the blue curacao with another tray of ice and crush until slushy. Set aside.
Lastly, combine the vodka, lemonade and last ice tray and crush until slushy. Set aside.
Layer your drinks starting with the cranberry slush on the bottom, then the blue curacao slush and lastly the vodka lemonade slush on the top.
Top with something fun and patriotic like mini american flags or swirly straws.
3. Patriotic Panna Cotta Shooters
- 6 oz grenadine syrup
- 1/2 tsp. powdered gelatin
- 1 tbsp. cold water
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 1/2 cup half and half
- 3 tbsp. sugar
- 1 tsp. coconut extract
- 3 oz. blue curaçao
- gold star edible glitter, or other star-shaped sprinkles
Pour 1 oz of grenadine into six 3 oz clear glasses. Freeze grenadine solid, and keep glasses stored in freezer.
In a small cup, sprinkle the powdered gelatin over the cold water and let stand until absorbed. Set aside.
Combine the coconut milk, half and half and sugar in a saucepan. Heat the mixture until just boiling.
Microwave the gelatin mixture for 7-10 seconds, until melted and liquid. Remove the milk mixture from heat source and whisk in melted gelatin.
Add coconut extract. Allow mixture to cool significantly.
Remove glasses of frozen grenadine from freezer and very slowly pour in 2 oz of cooled coconut panna cotta into each glass.
A little red from the grenadine may bleed into the white panna cotta, but as it stands the red should settle back down to the bottom.
Refrigerate glasses until panna cotta is set and grenadine layer has completely thawed.
Just before serving pour over 1/2 oz. blue curaçao and sprinkle with edible star glitter.
4. Frozen Boozy Bomb Pop Drink
To make a simple syrup, combine sugar and water and heat in a small saucepan until sugar dissolves. Cool completely in refrigerator.
In a blender add the plain vodka and lime juice, 2 oz simple syrup, and 1.5 cups of ice.
Blend on high until it reaches a "slush like" consistency, adding more ice if necessary.
Pour into a container and place in the freezer.
Repeat for the blue curacao, using 2 oz simple syrup, and 1.5 cups of ice.
Repeat for the cherry vodka, using 2 oz simple syrup, and 1.5 cups of ice.
Let the 'layers' chill in freezer until ready to use.
To assemble, spoon each layer, building from the bottom of the glass, up.
5. Mini Layered Shooters
Pour grenadine into the bottom of a shot glass.
Gently float the schnapps over the grenadine, pouring using the back of a spoon.
Gently top the shot glass with blue curacao, again using back of a spoon to maintain coloured layers.
