Bridget sips on a Mayfair Mojito at Hush
Meet Bridget Firtle, entrepreneur, founder and distiller of Owney's Rum. She's from NYC, her Rum's made in NYC, and she's getting rave reviews on a global scale. We met this warm, engaging and just-pretty-damn-cool ex-banker at Hush in Mayfair, where she was about to show the bar staff how to let her Rum shine in cocktails...
WHAT ARE YOU UP TO AT THE MOMENT?
I've just landed from a flight from New York, for my first promotional tour to launch Owney's in the UK. I'm drinking a Mayfair Mojito [Owney's Rum, lime and mint, topped with Luc Belaire Rosé] - my first taste of Owney's in the UK! I've got interviews, staff trainings at bars and Imbibe coming up over the next few days. This is my first engagement since stepping of the plane.
GET HOME, FEET UP, WHAT'S IN YOUR GLASS?
IF YOU WERE A DRINK WHAT WOULD YOU BE AND WHY?
A daiquiri - you just can't beat that blend of Rum, lime and sugar!
YOU CAN CHOOSE ANYONE TO TAKE A SEAT NEXT TO YOU AT THE BAR - WHO IS IT AND HOW WOULD THE NIGHT GO?
Ernest Hemingway, and we'd drink daiquiris! I know this sounds a lot like the last two answers, but I just love 'em! It sounds like in the UK you have a few more Rum cocktails to choose from, but daiquiris aren't really known so much in New York, and they're one of the best ways to enjoy White Rum. [Only good quality, well-flavoured Rum like Owney's, mind! - ed]
SHAKEN OR STIRRED?
Depends on the time of year. In the summer you'd definitely want shaken, but when it's cold a stirred cocktail is better.
FINALLY, WHO WOULD YOU RAISE A GLASS TO AND WHY?
'Owney' Madden! He was a rum-running gangster in the prohibition era and was my inspiration for Owney's. He caused new wave of interest in Rum, and it was because of that interest that people went to the Caribbean and tried daiquiris.
